Be inspired

Recently The Sunday Times voted Palma the best city to live in! Which is a wonderful endorsement for our much loved island.

Accessible from northern Europe in around 2 hours and only 10 minutes from Mallorca airport (and well away from Magaluf and S’Arenal) this classy pocket sized capital delivers on all of its promises. Grand tree-lined avenues lend shelter from the summer sun while towering palms stand watch over regal yachts adorning the mariners and coastline. A wealth of restaurants and café bars sit alluringly amongst ancient pathways weaving around venerable city walls opening out into placas both vibrant and welcoming. It also has one of the greatest and varied collection of restaurants one could hope to come across.

Our advice to you is simply, get lost! Honestly, go and lose yourself in this safe and seductive city and find out for yourself what everyone is talking about.

Island notes
When planning a trip to Mallorca many have only one thing on their minds...
The beach. But Mallorca is an island of great diversity. Were you to travel in any direction you could find yourself passing through vast plains of corn and farmland only to then delve into dense forest. Traversing twisting mountain passes to arrive on the shores of crystal clear lakes flanked by pines, such you’d expect in California or the like. Villages precariously perched on cliffs regally overlooking panoramic views, punctuated by grand churches and spires or simply stumble upon that perfect spot nestled amongst vineyards and lush orchards. And then there’s the beaches! May 1st saw the beginning of a fiesta that wonders throughout the island during the summer months. These fiestas de pueblos celebrate their host town and local area’s arts, cuisine, wine (lots of wine) as well as live music, both traditional and modern. Most of the local shops, bars and restaurants swap inside for out setting up stalls and corrals adding a grand splash of colour and noise to the already bustling surroundings. There is always something for the children be it rides, animals or shows and while this is a celebration and spirits are high it is very much a matter of local pride so everyone is on their best behaviour.

Sure, the sun loungers are comfortable and the pool is the perfect temperature, but we are passionate about showing you the whole Mallorcan experience, from secret coves and hidden mountain top villages, to the best places to eat and drink. Don’t miss out on the magic.

Markets
A visit to Mallorca would not be complete without a trip to one of its markets, indoor or out. But it doesn’t have to be for that last minute present for a friend or relative.

The island’s markets are becoming ever more impressive as they slowly expand and embrace their natural surroundings with each market offering items very specific to the area whether it’s gastronomic, artisan crafts or clothing.

Although markets are very much a draw for visitors and an important part of the local economy essentially markets are still the place where many locals get their everyday fresh produce; the corner stone of the ‘Mediterranean diet’.

Forage through the street and stalls to discover wild mushrooms and asparagus, capers, local honey, olives and oils, nuts, fruits, flowers and preserves delivered and sold direct from local farms, fields and forests. It’s the perfect opportunity to try something that may not be usually on your menu.

Where can you get turquoise tides gently caressing golden shimmering shorelines AND blinding silky white alpine slopes within only minutes of one another? The answer is Mallorca.

Es Trenc, on the southern coast of Mallorca, has for a long time been the preferred destination for film makers and photographers looking for the classic sun drenched shot usually found at the other end of a long haul flight. In order to get to these wondrous expanses of beach you must first travel through the delights of the Mallorcan countryside, wading through oceans of cornfields until you arrive at the Ses Salines salt flats (Salines de Colonia Saint Jordi) and its majestic alien salt peaks. This unusually location has now become popular for the perfect ski ware fashion shoot, with its breathtaking contrast between the slopes of salt clawing at the faultless Mediterranean sky, the photographers are almost guaranteed perfect weather and light. Although I don’t think I envy anyone standing in full ski regalia under the under the Mallorcan sun.

In many ways Mallorca is quite a secretive island, keeping some of its best produce to itself and rightly so. While both the Romans and Phoenicians collected salt from the pools of Es Trenc it has only been in the last 10 years or so that this much used condiment has been available to a wider audience. Like the nearby thermal spa, Fontsanta, flor de sal or sea blossom, boasts a unique super charged cocktail of minerals, low in sodium chloride content and with higher levels of magnesium, a natural flavour enhancer, means only a pinch is needed to season your food. An ideal choice for the health conscience.

Best Beach

For the family

Along the south coast of Mallorca runs possibly the islands most famous beach, Es Trenc.

However, not everyone knows that these golden sands are split into 3 different parts; one of which is Sa Rapita.

Sa Rapita beach runs into Ses Covetes beach which joins up with Es Trenc punctuated only by a scattering of beach bars and houses. However at Sa Rapita, once you have passed the mariner and yacht club, this naturally charming beach is only overlooked by the bordering trees and woodland which begs to be explored. Like its neighbouring beaches the turquoise shallows reach far into the surf making it ideal conditions to school your water babies or simply have a splash to cool off.

The yacht club offers not only a brief rest bite from the sun, sea and sand but also offers facilities including showers and an outstanding menu on their restaurant terrace. With its easy access and parking it makes for an enjoyable day for all.

Food
Like many countries around the globe, some of Mallorca’s best food is its most simple.

Fresh produce cooked well using recipes often passed down through generations, forming the corner stone of the much eulogised ‘Mediterranean diet’. This rich gastronomic island has so much on offer with its restaurants, cafes and markets serving up its plentiful bounty ensuring you can return home with a lasting glow, inside and out.

Walking
Fit in a day’s hiking in the mountains

Walking is the ideal way to discover Mallorca. With the island’s incredible dynamic terrain it’s no surprise that there are some sensational experiences to be had; be it it coastal strolls, valleys and ridges, beaches, olive and citrus groves, or shady pines. While walking has become more popular in recent years, most byways are still quiet, lending a real sense of discovery.
